History of income tax in the U.K. Discusses origins (introduced in January 1799 as a means of paying for the war against the French forces under Napoleon), a new approach to taxation during World War I, the Pay as Your Earn (PAYE) tax collection system introduced in 1944, and the taxation system at the end of the 20th century (including the Queen electing to pay taxes in 1992).
