AFSCME, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the 1968 Memphis Sanitation Strike
This 2008 feature uses historical and retrospective articles to recall the events starting on February 12, 1968, in which 1,300 sanitation workers (almost all African American) in Memphis, Tennessee, went on strike. During the strike, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. traveled to Memphis to support the striking workers, where he was assassinated, on April 4, 1968.
