"Sinkers" Provide Missing Piece in Deep-Sea Puzzle
Information about a June 2005 research article in which marine biologists from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) present their findings about how animals in the deep sea get enough to eat. They found that "'sinkers' — the cast-off mucus nets of small midwater animals called larvaceans — are a significant source of food for deep-sea organisms." The sinkers also aid in the ocean absorbing carbon molecules (which might otherwise contribute to global warming). Includes images.
