Pragmatism Cybrary
Pragmatism is briefly described ( The Columbia Encyclopedia , Sixth Edition, 2001) as a "method of philosophy in which the truth of a proposition is measured by its correspondence with experimental results and by its practical outcome." It was developed in the early 1870s with Charles S. Pierce's adoption of Alexander Bain's suggestion that beliefs are habits of acting rather than representations of reality. This Web site is an academic research resource offering history, theory, writings, and discussions on nature, science, individuality, and community. Information on famous pragmatists, directories of centers and societies, philosophy program lists, conferences, and publications are also included.
