Lift Every Voice: Music in American Life
An exploration of the history of the ballads, hymns, spirituals, patriotic odes, minstrel and musical works, and protest songs of the United States. "Virginiana" features audio clips of songs from each musical style explored. The exhibition’s title is taken from a hymn composed by African-American brothers James Weldon and J. Rosamond Johnson in the 1800s that has come to be an anthem for Black Americans. From the University of Virginia Library.
