Ishi's Long Road Home: A California Indian's Preserved Brain Accentuates His Tragic, Mysterious Life
An article about the search for the brain of Ishi, the Yahi Indian whose last years were lived in a museum of anthropology. From 1917 to 1999, the preserved brain was stored in the Smithsonian Institution. Written for the January 8, 2000 issue of Science News Online, the article describes the first steps toward returning the brain to descendants of Ishi's people for ceremonial burial.
