Through Open Eyes: 95 Years of Roslyn's Black Mining History
In 1888, the coal mines of Roslyn, Washington state, were shut down when the Knights of Labor went on strike. Refusing to meet the strikers' demands, the mine owners recruited black miners from the South. Between 1888 and 1889 over 300 black miners and their families arrived in Washington state. This exhibit, which includes a searchable photo database, tells the story of the recruits and the community they created in the foothills of the Cascades.
