"Online version of John James Audubon's Birds of America ... from an 1840 'First Octavo Edition' of Audubon's complete seven volume text." Includes Audubon's images and original text descriptions. "Bird species can be found listed alphabetically, or categorized by family. Audubon's drawings of some species' anatomical features are also included in the 'figures' section." The online edition includes a list of species that have become extinct since Audubon's time and a list of state birds.

The National Audubon Society Web site is an excellent North American bird conservation resource, providing state-by-state information on bird species that are threatened, endangered, or of special concern. There are Christmas Bird Count reports, conservation and political action programs, a directory of local chapters, a brief biography of John James Audubon, and classroom activities and other materials for children. There are related links and topics in each section.

This is an "on-line checklist project where you can enter and store your bird observations in a central database, track your personal records, and share your observations with other birders and scientists." The central database is used by those "who want to know more about the distributions and movement patterns of birds across [North America]." Requires free (but fairly detailed) registration to use "My eBird." From Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society.

Official site for the Audubon Society "early-winter bird census, where volunteers follow specified routes through a designated 15-mile (24-km) diameter circle, counting every bird they see or hear all day." Provides background on the count, which occurs annually from December 14 to January 5, and current and historical data from counts.
