Background information about a program started in May 2005 to educate people about the environmental dangers associated with the Mackenzie Gas Project in Alberta, Canada, and the related plan to extract oil from tar sands. "Tar sands oil generates two-and-a-half times as much greenhouse gases of conventional oil production due to the massive amounts of energy needed to extract, upgrade and refine the bitumen."
