Made famous by Billie Holiday's rendition, the song "Strange Fruit" is "a harrowing portrayal of the lynching of a black man in the American South." This site tells the story of the song, which was written by a Jewish teacher from the Bronx who later adopted the orphaned sons of executed spies Julius and Ethel Rosenberg.
