Description:
This exhibition uses the example of the ports of Oakland and San Francisco to demonstrate the development of shipping container use at U.S. ports. Topics include the container system (as compared to conventional freighters), the longshoremen who work with the containers, varieties of cargo hooks, the International Longshoremen's and Warehousemen's Union (ILWU), and more. Part of a larger exhibit on transportation from the National Museum of American History.
