Encompassing the Globe: Portugal and the World in the 16th and 17th Centuries

Description:
This companion to a 2007 exhibit at the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution traces Portuguese sea voyages in the 16th and 17th centuries through images of paintings, prints, and objects. Topics include the role of Portugal in Europe during the "Age of Discovery," and Portuguese voyages to Africa, China, and around the Indian Ocean. The exhibition may also be explored using Google Earth technology.
