U.S. Department of State: Independent States and Dependencies URL: http://www.state.gov/s/inr/states/ Description: The U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Intelligence and Research maintains lists of independent states and dependencies of special sovereignty. "These lists provide the short-form and long-form names, two-letter country code, and capital or administrative center for countries and dependencies. The independent states list indicates whether a state has diplomatic relations with the U.S. and whether the state is a member of the United Nations. The dependencies list indicates which state has sovereignty."
