Ruffs, Ribbons, Collars, and Cravats: A Brief History of Neckwear as Illustrated by the Rosenbach Collection of Portrait Miniatures URL: http://www.rosenbach.org/exhibitions/online.html Description: Using portrait miniatures, this presentation recounts the history of neckwear from the 16th to early 19th centuries. It notes that, for Western culture, neckwear seems to have originated with "the phenomenon of layering garment over garment. ... [An] undergarment, or chemise, had a drawstring around the neckline. When pulled tightly ... the neckline of the chemise would gather and form a shallow ruffle with a knotted or bow-tied string." From the Rosenbach Museum and Library.
