Museum of Bad Art (MOBA) view detail comment email this

MOBA "is the world's only museum dedicated to the collection, preservation, exhibition, and celebration of bad art in all its forms." The site exhibits some of MOBA's portraits, landscapes, and portrayals of "unseen forces"; the collection is composed of works with "a special quality that sets them apart in one way or another from the merely incompetent." The commentary and staff interviews about these treasures (many from thrift stores and trash heaps) cleverly spoof gallery-speak.

This presentation looks at the "backyard paradises" created by visionary artists (outsider or self-taught artists "who didn't necessarily go to school to be artists"). Includes profiles of the artists (from the U.S., France, India, and South Africa), images and videos of the art (such as Bottle Village, the Owl House and Camel Yard, and Watts Towers), a create-your-own backyard paradise feature, and related material. From Independent Lens and the Electric Shadows Project.
