Discharge of ballast water National Ballast Information Clearinghouse (NBIC) The NBIC, a program of the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center and the United States Coast Guard, "collects, analyzes, and interprets data on the ballast water management practices of commercial ships." A main goal of the NBIC is "to determine the degree to which ... [ballast] water has undergone ... treatments designed to reduce the likelihood of ballast-mediated invasions by exotic species." It features a database with ballast discharge information and links to research. http://invasions.si.edu/nbic/ Topics: Environment, Industries, Plants, Transportation, Water Last updated Oct 12, 2005 |
