Backyard Burning view detail comment email this

This site describes the harmful effects of backyard burning on human health and the environment. "Burning trash in the open produces many pollutants [that can cause serious respiratory ailments] including dioxins, ...hydrocarbons, volatile organic compounds [VOCs], carbon monoxide, hexachlorobenzene, and ash." Backyard burning "produces various compounds toxic to the environment including nitrogen oxides, VOCs, carbon monoxide, and particle pollution." Includes information about local burning practices and restrictions. From the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Clean Air Interstate Rule view detail comment email this

In March 2005, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued "the Clean Air Interstate Rule (CAIR), a rule that will achieve the largest reduction in air pollution in more than a decade." This site features background information and updates about the rule, which mostly affects states in the eastern half the United States through mandates to reduce sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions. Includes the text of the rule and related charts.

Clean Air Markets: Environmental Issues: Acid Rain view detail comment email this

Introductory material about acid rain, "a broad term used to describe several ways that acids fall out of the atmosphere. A more precise term is acid deposition." Includes a discussion of how acid rain is caused by pollutants in the environment, how acid rain is measured, and what can be done to reduce acid rain. Also includes experiments for students. In English and Spanish. From the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

National Atmospheric Deposition Program (NADP) view detail comment email this

The purpose of this national network is "to collect data on the chemistry of precipitation for monitoring of ... long-term trends." Weekly samples are analyzed to learn acid rain (also known as "atmospheric deposition") content. The site features links to data and reports. The NADP is located at the Illinois State Water Survey, and is a cooperative program of federal, state, and non-governmental groups.
