Public art Art on the Avenues Presents this Wenatchee, Washington state, "outdoor gallery of sculptures mounted on pedestals of indigenous columnar basalt featuring the works of many nationally acclaimed artists." Exhibits change every year. The site includes a list of the current artists and their works, photographs of pieces purchased for permanent display, a prospectus for artists wishing to submit work, a history of the project, and information about becoming involved in the nonprofit, volunteer organization that runs the program. http://www.artontheavenues.org/ Topics: Art Last updated Jun 6, 2005 Chicago: The City in Art This site "is a collaborative project between The Art Institute of Chicago and the Chicago Public Schools. The program is designed to introduce teachers and students to recently restored murals in their schools." The site features images of murals painted between 1900 and 1945. The varied mural topics include characters from children's literature, a construction site, and William Penn. Artist and architect Maya Lin designs the installations to "reflect a consciousness of the tremendous changes set in motion by the Corps of Discovery in the Northwest -- on its native people and environment." Visit the Worldwide Galley to see the hundreds of cow sculptures. The sculptures are ultimately auctioned off for charity. "CowParade is not meant to be high art. ... [Over] 150 life-sized, fiberglass mules, decorated by renowned and emerging local artists, as well as schools and nonprofits" were displayed in this area. SPARC espouses public art as an organizing tool for addressing contemporary issues, fostering cross-cultural understanding and promoting civic dialogue." The website features art projects (see the large-scale murals produced at the UCLA César Chávez/SPARC Digital Mural Lab), services, training and education, a newsletter, and a discussion forum. The sculpture continues to be a source of pleasure and mystery for Agency employees with a few employees taking the challenge to 'break the code.'" Features a photo of the sculpture, the transcribed code, and an essay about the sculpture and attempts to solve the puzzle.
