"Trade routes, both maritime and overland, were the primary means by which Buddhist thought and imagery were conveyed from India, the birthplace of Buddhism, to other Asian countries." This online exhibit provides an overview of the trade routes and the Buddhist religion, and images of Buddhist art from Korea, Japan, China, Mongolia, the Himalayas, Southeast Asia, and Sri Lanka. From Silk to Oil: Cross-Cultural Connections Along the Silk Roads view detail comment email this

This curriculum guide about Asian trading routes, particularly in China, "begins in the second century BCE and ends in the contemporary period. Its twenty-three curriculum units teach the Silk Roads through geography, history, religion, literature, and the arts." Units include lesson plans, study questions, photographs, statistics, and maps. "Supplementary Materials" includes a glossary and lists of additional resources. Funded by the U.S. Department of Education and produced by the China Institute in America.

It discusses the rise and decline of the Silk Road as well as the impact of the Mongols and other foreign influences. Includes photos and a bibliography. The Silk Road Foundation Web site offers a fascinating introduction to the history and culture of the people and places along the ancient Silk Road which includes Inner and Central Asia. In addition to information about the lectures, courses, and community events that the Foundation sponsors, this site includes a variety of articles, bibliographies, and images related to Silk Road topics. Also included are sections devoted to Xinjiang and Dunhuang studies, a historical chronology (still under construction) with links to additional information (e.g. history of silk), and a list of other interesting Silk Road links.

A "public education project using the 'Silk Road' theme to explore cultural interaction across Eurasia from the beginning of the common era (A.D.) to the Seventeenth Century." Includes curriculum guides for all ages, historical texts, maps, descriptions of traditional culture of nomadic Central Asians, as well as a virtual exhibit of art and artifacts. Searchable. The Silk Road: Trade, Travel, War and Faith view detail comment email this

"The Silk Road is the ancient trade route passing from the shores of the Mediterranean through Bukhara and Samarkand to Dunhuang and on to Xian in central China." The site is a companion to an exhibit of manuscripts, paintings, artifacts, and textiles about the "real people" along the route. It presents illustrated essays on the development of the book, languages and scripts, Buddhas and bodhisattvas, games, and the sky. From the British Library.
