America in Caricature, 1765-1865




This online exhibition presents a selection of American political cartoons from the Lilly Library, Indiana University, Bloomington. "The caricatures depict times of turbulence in American history and range in date from the Revolutionary War to the War of 1812 and to the presidential elections of 1860 and 1864 which brought Abraham Lincoln to the White House." Includes an introductory essay and images of over two dozen cartoons.

Radical Visions: Graphic Satire in the Yiddish Press, 1894-1939




This small exhibit of cartoons from Yiddish newspapers provides a look at Jewish life at the turn of the 20th century. The five images, which are accompanied by full annotations, demonstrate how biblical imagery was used to comment on social and economic issues of the day. Herblock's History: Political Cartoons from the Crash to the Millennium




Features the work of Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist Herb Block. He was best known for caricatures of American presidents from Herbert Hoover to Bill Clinton and for his work during the Watergate investigation. Puck's Homepage: Uniting Mugwumps and the Masses




This "analysis of cartooning as well as Gilded Age political culture" discusses how the cartoons in Joseph Keppler's satirical magazine Puck conveyed the liberal viewpoint during the 1880's. There are a number of images (a few with extensive explanatory notes) of the work of Keppler, Bernhard Gilliam, and James A. Wales. There is also A Brief History of Cartoons.
