This travel site covers national parks and related natural wonders in Colorado, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Utah, and California, including the Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce, Carlsbad Caverns, and Yosemite, among many others. Though the information is brief and there are no links provided to the official sites for each park, there are photographs and some maps making it a good starting place for people planning a trip through the Southwest. Information is also provided on state parks and related areas of interest.

A sampling of photos from a variety of collections, some dating back to the 1870s. The exhibits include the "Postcard Collection," which captures "public buildings, main street scenes, town panoramas, amusements, and transportation"; "Department of Corrections Mug Shot Collection"; WPA projects; photos and a virtual tour of a couple orphanages; and other images depicting early 20th century life in Colorado.

Water saving and management tips and a guide to the Xeriscape "method of landscaping. .... Rather than a specific 'look' or a limited group of plants, Xeriscape is a combination of seven basic landscaping principles." This site explains the principles and provides before-and-after photographs of gardens landscaped using them. There is some Colorado focus, as the site is from Denver Water; the term "Xeriscape" was coined in the 1980s by one of its environmental planners.

A couple who have visited ghost towns across six western states have posted hundreds of photographs online. The photos include Bodie, California; Virginia City, Nevada; Clarkdale, Arizona; and Silver City, Utah, along with towns in Montana, Idaho, and Colorado. Dozens of towns in each state are listed and there's a collection of links to more information on each town. Users can send an electronic postcard with an image from the gallery. The photos are copyrighted, and give an incredible impression of each unique place.

The construction of the dam is presented in the context of the Great Depression, its enormity a metaphor for strength and modernity in a time of hardship. The site has social commentary about the creation of Boulder City, maps and plans, Franklin D. Roosevelt's dedication speech, and photographs taken throughout the project, including several of the Colorado River diversion process.

Surveyors of the American West view detail comment email this

This New York Public Library virtual exhibit highlights America's westward expansion through the photographs and searchable notes of photographer William Henry Jackson and of civil/mining engineer Robert Brewster Stanton. Three months of Jackson's diary entries made during the summer of 1869 along with many large format images and stereoscopic views are on display. Four volumes of Stanton's notes and selected photographs taken during two expeditions surveying the canyons along the Colorado River from 1889 to 1890 are also featured.

Traders: Voices from the Trading Post view detail comment email this

With funding from the now-disbanded United Indian Traders Association (UITA), the University of Northern Arizona's library is conducting oral history interviews with over fifty Indian traders of the southwest United States. More than just a collection of interviews, this site also contains photographic slide shows of traders and trading posts from 1860-1999. Additionally, the site contains interview excerpts about livestock, weaving, jewelry, pinon nuts, medicine men, and pawn. Focus is primarily on the Navajo, Hopi, and Zuni reservations of Arizona, New Mexico, and southern Utah and Colorado. A fascinating and historically important project.
