Horseshoe Crabs: "A Living Fossil" view detail comment email this

"The horseshoe crab (Limulus polyphemus), is the oldest living fossil in Maryland." This site provides illustrated essays about the crab's life history, anatomy, conservation, and medical uses. A protein in the crab's blood called Limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL) is used to test certain drugs for bacteria. Also features information about fisheries and raising horseshoe crabs in the classroom.
