Global Positioning System (GPS)
Websites presented in alphabetical order Corn Maze Geography: Teaching Geography Using Corn Mazes This document features "lessons for teaching geography through the concept of corn mazes," which are "paths cut or plowed in a field of corn (maize) so that the paths form a pattern when viewed from overhead." Lesson topics include navigation, maps, global positioning systems (GPS), aerial photographs, and other geography concepts. From the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), Rocky Mountain Mapping Center. http://rockyweb.cr.usgs.gov/outreach/cornmazegeography.html Topics: Geography, Lesson Plans, Technology, Transportation Last updated Feb 5, 2008 The Degree Confluence Project "The goal of the project is to visit each of the latitude and longitude integer degree intersections in the world, and to take pictures at each location." See the FAQ for exceptions. This is a volunteer effort that so far documents over 5,000 confluences in over 100 countries. Each site is listed by country; there is a world map with clickable sites and a numerical index for latitude/longitude and another index of visitor names. http://confluence.org/ Topics: Geography Last updated Oct 9, 2007 Galileo & GPS A dossier of statements on the U.S. position on Galileo--the European Union's (EU) developing satellite navigation system--and interoperability between that system and the United States' Global Positioning System (GPS). From the United States Mission to the European Union. http://useu.usmission.gov/Dossiers/Galileo_GPS/ Topics: Geography, International Governments, Technology, Transportation Last updated Oct 31, 2006 Galileo: European Satellite Navigation System Information about "Galileo ... a global navigation infrastructure under civil control. It will consist of 30 satellites, the associated ground infrastructure and regional/local augmentations," the first portion of which was launched in December 2005 under the auspices of the European Union and the European Space Agency. Includes a FAQ, descriptions of applications (transportation, agriculture, leisure, and more), and related publications. Some material available in several languages. From the European Commission, European Union (EU). http://ec.europa.eu/dgs/energy_transport/galileo/index_en.htm Topics: Astronomy, Technology Last updated Jun 11, 2006 Geocaching Treasure hunt for global positioning system (GPS) users. Individuals and organizations set up caches all over the world and share the locations of these caches on the Internet. GPS users can then use the location coordinates to find the caches. Once found, a cache may provide the visitor with a wide variety of rewards. Visitor is asked to leave something in exchange for an item in the cache and to indicate the visit in the logbook included in the cache. Site includes a guide to purchasing a GPS unit. Also called GPS Stash Hunt and Global Positioning Stash hunt. http://www.geocaching.com/ Topics: Geography, Outdoor Recreation, Technology, Transportation Last updated Mar 19, 2001 Geoscience Australia Australia's "leading geoscience research and information agency, responsible for producing and providing spatial information to the Australian community." Online tools include a place name database, mapping systems, earthquake maps, sunrise/sunset and moonrise/moonset times, and a distance calculator. The agency researches minerals, geomagnetism, oil and gas production, marine and coastal activities, geodesy and GPS (Global Positioning System), satellite remote sensing; and more. From the Australian Government. http://www.ga.gov.au/ Topics: Geography, Geology, Maps by Place, Regions of the World, Science, Scientific Themes, Technology, Transportation Last updated Jul 11, 2006 Global Positioning System An explanation, in outline form, of how the Global Positioning System (GPS) works, including the frequencies and modulation signals. Included are graphics and sample data. There are related links and a glossary of acronyms. http://www.colorado.Edu/geography/gcraft/notes/gps/gps_f.html Topics: Geography, Technology, Transportation Last updated Nov 20, 2001 Global Positioning System Primer Information about the global positioning system (GPS), an aerospace technology that uses satellites and ground equipment to determine positions anywhere on Earth and used today by the military and in navigation and mapping. Includes a brief history of navigation, a GPS timeline, and links to related sites. From the Aerospace Corporation, "a federally funded research and development center in support of national security, civil and commercial space programs." http://www.aero.org/education/primers/gps/ Topics: Geography, Technology, Transportation Last updated Jan 24, 2005 Gravity Probe B: Testing Einstein's Universe Was Einstein's theory of general relativity correct? Gravity Probe B, a relativity gyroscope experiment co-developed by NASA and Stanford University scientists, will attempt to answer that question. This site includes detailed information about the project, lithographs, a timeline, a FAQ, scientific papers, an image library, a glossary, classroom materials, and related information. http://einstein.stanford.edu/ Topics: Geography, Physics, Ready Reference & Quick Facts, Science, Science, Technology, Transportation Last updated Apr 19, 2004 Lost at Sea: The Search for Longitude This site is a companion to a Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) NOVA program that tells the story of how British clockmaker John Harrison solved the problem of calculating longitude and thus "discovered the key to navigating on the open seas." The site provides a program transcript, information about secrets of ancient navigation and the current Global Positioning System (GPS), and thoughts from scientists about recent scientific challenges. Also includes a teacher's guide. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/longitude/ Topics: Astronomy, Geography, Technology, Transportation Last updated Jul 27, 2004 Mobile Millennium Starting in November 2008 and "spanning 18 months, the Mobile Millennium project will design, test and implement a state-of-the-art system to collect traffic data from GPS-equipped mobile phones and estimate traffic conditions in real-time." This site provides background, links to news, and an opportunity for you to download software so your cell phone can become a mobile traffic sensor.
