The site hopes to "increase hikers' enjoyment of the Northwest by sharing no-hype information about Northwest hiking destinations." Browsable by region or by desired experience (winter, beach, lake, or hikes with lookouts, peaks, rivers, waterfalls, or wildflowers). The Bay Trail is a proposed 500-mile network of multi-use pathways that one day will circle the San Francisco Bay and San Pablo Bay, passing through all nine Bay Area counties, linking 47 of its 98 cities, and crossing the major toll bridges. This directory has been around since 1997 and calls itself the "world's largest hiking trail database." Users can search or browse the resources, which are arranged both under general topics, such as knots, techniques, huts and lodging, or equipment, and by continent and country. The Dutch hiker who maintains this site also has a section called Henk's Hikes that describes his walks and hikes and is a delight to browse. This site provides descriptions of walks in England, Scotland, Wales, the Channel Islands, Ireland, and Northern Ireland. Includes some urban walks and walks starting at youth hostels. This volunteer-driven organization works "to preserve, enhance and promote hiking opportunities in Washington state through collaboration, education, advocacy and trail maintenance." The site includes a searchable trail guide and guides to Northwest flora and fauna. "Northwest Hiker's Notebook" includes trail etiquette, maps, wilderness regulations, fees, and weather advice. "Backcountry Kitchen" consists of user-submitted recipes.
