This website discourages the landscaping use of English ivy, which "is not native to the United States and has no natural predators or pests to keep it in check. National Ballast Information Clearinghouse (NBIC) view detail comment email this

The NBIC, a program of the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center and the United States Coast Guard, "collects, analyzes, and interprets data on the ballast water management practices of commercial ships." A main goal of the NBIC is "to determine the degree to which ... [ballast] water has undergone ... treatments designed to reduce the likelihood of ballast-mediated invasions by exotic species." It features a database with ballast discharge information and links to research.
