The IDA explains how glare and excessive illumination prevent us from seeing the night sky, with suggestions for improving lighting at home and in communities. Includes articles on how outdoor lighting affects the environment; the reports and studies section has "The First World Atlas of the Artificial Night Sky Brightness" published in 2001, which vividly shows where lights shine brightest around the world.

To observe this occasion, which takes place the first week of April, "everyone in the United States turns off outdoor lighting to temporarily reduce light pollution so we can step back for a moment and realize the wonder that our universe holds." The site includes photos, forums on astronomy topics, and links to NDSW's affiliates and to educational astronomy sites; the observance was created in 2003 by an amateur astronomer.
