A comprehensive and informative site for history on the United States Merchant Marine at war. Most of the links cover WWII, but the Civil War, Revolutionary War, Vietnam War, and many others are also represented. The FAQ page is an excellent starting point for getting an overview on service in the Merchant Marine. Built by U.S. Merchant Marine Veterans and dedicated to those who died in service during the war, this site also provides links on obtaining information on ships or mariners' service records and applying for veteran's status.

DANFS Online: Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships view detail comment email this

"DANFS is the foremost reference regarding US naval vessels. Published in nine volumes (from 1959 to 1991), it gives histories for virtually every US naval vessel. ... Currently the online collection includes over 7000 ship histories, and more are being added. These files are faithfully transcribed from DANFS, without updating or corrections." Entries are divided into modern and "Old Navy" eras, then arranged by type of ship (battleships, aircraft carriers, etc.).

A history of the events of July 17, 1944, when a major explosion rocked the naval base at the mouth of the Sacramento River at Port Chicago, California (now the Concord Naval Weapons Station). The working conditions, explosion, mutiny, court martial, and pardon of black servicemen involved are reviewed. There is also an exploration of the entrenched racism at this base.
