This October 2004 report from U.S. Surgeon General Richard H. Carmona states that by 2020 half of all Americans over the age of 50 will be at risk for fractures if they do nothing to prevent bone loss. Established in 1991, this 15-year clinical study focuses on the effects of hormone replacement therapy (HRT), diet, and calcium and vitamin D supplements on heart disease, breast and colorectal cancer, and osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. This Web site provides an overview on the program, plus updates and mid-study observations. It includes discussions of the decisions to stop early the estrogen-plus-progestin and estrogen-alone postmenopausal hormone therapy trials.

An assessment tool that estimates risks of cancer, diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, and stroke. The site focuses on prevention and offers eight lifestyle recommendations: maintain a health weight, exercise regularly, don't smoke, eat a healthy diet, drink alcohol in moderation (if at all), protect yourself from the sun, protect yourself from sexually transmitted infections (SDIs), and get screening tests.
