Commonly known as the "genius grants," this MacArthur Foundation program "awards unrestricted fellowships to talented individuals who have shown extraordinary originality and dedication in their creative pursuits and a marked capacity for self-direction." Fellows have included "scientists, historians, poets and novelists, artists and composers, and people working in public service."
