In 1859, a San Juan Island farmer became enraged when he discovered a Hudson's Bay Company pig rooting in his potatoes. He shot the pig and started an armed confrontation between the United States and Canada known as the Pig War. The mission, which is near Walla Walla, Washington state, was founded in 1836 in what was then the Oregon Territory.
