This 2006 article provides an introduction to the movement to simplify written English spelling. The story notes that while there have been no changes in spelling rules in the 100 years since Andrew Carnegie helped create the Simplified Spelling Board and President Theodore Roosevelt "tried to force the government to use simplified spelling in its publications," advocates "aren't giving up."
